What defines a landscape?

This was the question from which originated a long investigation aimed at de-constructing landscape elements to examine their visual ambiguity.

By forcing myself to dissect elements quite familiar to me - and of no particular aesthetic or content relevance - I learned how to observe a territory by removing all of the assumptions.

I chose to work in an area that is known to have a strong industrial and productive vocation: the district of Sassuolo, province of Modena, Italy, where the massive industries of the ceramic sector have strongly characterized the environment.

By indulging in the chameleon-like properties of the raw material on which everything is based, clay, I was able to bring to life a surreal world from which seemingly indefinable elements emerge that, nevertheless, can be recognized as linked to the identity of the place.

In their primordial state or converted into grotesque artificial forms, the muds are brought back into an indefinite space-time dimension that questions the actual reliability of our gaze and perception of reality.
